This Apple and Strawberry Crumble combines tender strawberries and apples which make for a juicy bite while the nuttiness of the rolled oats, sweetness of the brown sugar, and crispness of the Harvest Crunch creates the perfect contrast of textures.
The start of the fall season is synonymous with apple desserts. My family loves to go apple picking, and I love to bake, so of course I have to make a bunch of delicious apple desserts every year. After bringing home a giant bag of apples from the farm I just knew I had to make a beautiful crumble.
This crumble is one of the recipes my Mother has made since I was a child. It is simple, quick, and fun to prepare (you get to use your hands to mix the crumble). My Mother’s secret ingredient has always been Harvest Crunch Cereal. This tasty cereal adds some extra crunch and sweetness, plus the added flavour of almonds and coconut. This time I decided to switch things up a bit and add some beautiful fresh strawberries. It was a huge hit with my family and will definitely be going into my regular rotation.
This Apple and Strawberry Crumble combines the flavours of fall: cinnamon, nutmeg and apple with the added sweetness of fresh strawberries. The tender strawberries and apples make for a juicy bite, while the nuttiness of the rolled oats, sweetness of the brown sugar, and crispness of the Harvest Crunch creates the perfect contrast of textures. This may not be a traditional oats-only crumble, I think you’ll agree that it’s crunch and flavour are far superior to the original.

INGREDIENTS FOR APPLE AND STRAWBERRY CRUMBLE
All the ingredients for this Apple and Strawberry Crisp are easily sourced from any local grocer.
Crumble
- 2 cups Harvest Crunch cereal
- 2 cups Rolled Oats
- 1 1/2 cups Brown Sugar
- 1 ½ cups All Purpose Flour
- 1 cups Butter, room temperature
- 3 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp Nutmeg
Fruit Filling
- 1 tbsp All Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
- 4 Apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cups Strawberries, halved
CAN I USE LESS CRUMBLE TOPPING?
You can definitely use less crumble if you wish. I like having a high crumble to fruit ratio, but you can easily reduce the crumble and make this more fruity.
DO I NEED TO PEEL THE APPLES?
I find the texture of this crumble is best when the apples are peeled before slicing.
WHAT KIND OF APPLES SHOULD I USE?
I find that a less sweet apple is preferable for baking. I prefer to use Granny Smith Apples, but for a sweeter taste both Gala and Honeycrisp work beautifully as well.
WHY DO YOU USE HARVEST CRUNCH?
Growing up, my Mother always used some Harvest Crunch cereal in her crumbles. It adds coconut and slivered almonds to this delicious dish and I like the added flavour and texture.
INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS
CAN I USE FROZEN STRAWBERRIES INSTEAD OF FRESH?
I find that frozen strawberries become too mushy if used in this crumble. I strongly recommend using fresh.
I HAVE A NUT ALLERGY! DO I HAVE TO USE HARVEST CRUNCH?
Harvest Crunch Cereal contains both almonds and coconut, so if you have an allergy to either of these you’ll need a substitute in this dish. I would recommend using all large flake oats, and increasing your sugar by 1/4 cup to offset the reduced sweetness.
CAN I USE A DIFFERENT FRUIT INSTEAD OF APPLES?
The flavours in this crumble would work very well with pears as well.
CAN I USE WHITE SUGAR INSTEAD OF BROWN?
Brown sugar has added molasses which gives it a deeper, less cloying sweetness than white sugar. I like using brown sugar whenever I’m baking with oats because the flavours work so beautifully together. I strongly recommend using brown sugar in this recipe.
CAN I QUICK OATS INSTEAD OF ROLLED?
Absolutely not. Quick oats are much thinner and therefore cook much faster: your oats will be cooked long before your fruit, and you’ll end up with a mushy crumble.
