This Guacamole with Lemon and Lime uses perfectly ripe creamy avocadoes that are beautifully complimented by cumin, chili, fresh cilantro and citrus.

Guacamole is one of those universally appealing dishes. It is an avocado based dip that first originated in Mexico but has since become popular all over the world. There’s a million different recipes on the internet that each have their own twist on this delicious classic. Although every recipe is slightly different, there are only so many ways to personalize something as beautifully simple as guacamole. My twist uses both lemon and lime juice as well as a combination of seasonings that I’ve come to love.

One of the beautiful things about guacamole is all the ways that you can use this amazing dish. It’s perfection when served with tortilla chips of course, but it’s also delicious as a spread on burgers and sandwiches, as a topping on tacos and burritos, in rice bowls and salads, and this list goes on…

Perfectly ripe creamy avocadoes are beautifully complimented by earthy cumin, spicy chili, fresh cilantro and bright citrus fruit, while chunks of avocado and diced red onion add texture to this beautiful Creamy Guacamole with Lemon and Lime.

INGREDIENTS FOR CREAMY GUACAMOLE WITH LEMON AND LIME

All the ingredients for this delicious guacamole easy to source from any local grocer.

  • 4 Avocadoes
  • 1 tsp Cumin Powder
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder
  • 2 tbsp and 1/2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 2 tbsp and 1/2 tsp Lime Juice
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher Salt
  • 1/4 Vidalia Onion
  • 1 tbsp Cilantro, minced

WHAT IS KOSHER SALT?

Kosher salt has larger crystals than regular iodized salt. Although it is mined from traditional salt mines, it is less processed than normal table salt. It has larger flakes which make it easier to distribute, and therefore less likely to over salt your dish. It also adds some brine, flavour, and crunch.

WHAT AVOCADOS SHOULD I USE FOR MY GUACAMOLE?

I like buying Haas avocados because they tend to have more flesh and a beautiful flavour. If you’re using a smaller avocado, you may want to six to eight for this recipe.

IS CILANTRO THE SAME THING AS CORIANDER?

Yes. Cilantro and Coriander are the same thing. In North America, we tend to call the fresh herb Cilantro and the dried seeds or powder Coriander. Elsewhere, the whole plant is often referred to as Coriander.

HOW CAN I TELL IF AN AVOCADO IS RIPE?

A truly ripe avocado will have a dark brown skin and will give when pressed lightly. An overly soft avocado is likely overripe. If you accidentally buy one that turns out to be under ripe (hard and bright green), just place it in a bowl with some bananas and leave it on the counter for a day or so to soften up.

INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS

CAN I USE WHITE ONION INSTEAD OF RED VIDALIA?

If you’d like you can substitute a white onion however their flavour is sharper and won’t be as smooth tasting.

CAN I SUBSTITUTE FROZEN AVOCADO FOR FRESH?

Absolutely not. Frozen avocado has it’s uses, but this delicious guacamole is not one of them. Frozen avocado won’t have the bright fresh taste of fresh, and the texture won’t be the same.

CAN I USE PREPACKAGED CITRUS?

Both lemon and lime juice factor heavily in the flavour of this guacamole. It’s important that you use fresh lemon and lime juice in this recipe.

CAN I SUBSTITUTE PARSLEY FOR CILANTRO?

If you’re one of those people who have an extreme dislike for cilantro, then you do not have to use it. Cilantro adds a slightly bitter freshness to this dish, which can also be approximated with diced parsley. The substitution will obviously not be exact, but it will still taste good.
