With the warm weather fast approaching, there are few things that say summer to me more than fresh fruit and citrus. Two of my family’s favourites are fresh mango and lemons, and this beautiful Mango Salsa Recipe has both! It has all the flavours of a fruit salad with a bit of a kick from the chili powder. It’s bright, fresh, zesty, and tangy: everything you want in a dip. You can eat it with chips, tacos, fresh fish or chicken, or just straight out of the bowl. It’s that good! It’s the perfect party snack, accompaniment to a Mexican inspired meal, or as an appetizer. It will take you less than fifteen minutes from start to finish to prepare, it’s universally appealing (who doesn’t like fresh fruit?), and can be used in a variety of dishes. I promise if you try this recipe, you’ll be looking for reasons to make fresh Mango Salsa.

INGREDIENTS FOR MANGO SALSA

All the ingredients for Mango Salsa Recipe are easy to source from any local grocer.

  • 1/4 Vidalia onion
  • 1/2 Red sweet pepper
  • 6 Ataulfo mangos
  • 1 tbsp Cilantro
  • 2 1/2 tsp Lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 tsp Lime juice
  • 1 pinch Fleur de sel
  • 1 pinch Chili powder

WHAT IS AN ATAULFO MANGO?

Ataulfo mangos are a smaller yellow mango available in most grocery stores. I prefer them because I find their texture more buttery and their flesh sweeter than their larger red mangos counterparts.

WHAT DO I SERVE MANGO SALSA WITH?

I like to serve this mango salsa with good tortilla chips, but it would also be delicious on grilled fish, or in a taco. Savoury and sweet go beautifully together: experiment, and serve this beautiful dish with whatever you want!

WHAT IS FLEUR DE SEL?

Fleur de Sel (flower of salt) is sea salt. However, unlike coarse or fine sea salt, it has a flaked texture as a result of crystallization on the surface of the sea water as it evaporates. It is harvested by hand, and is an ideal finishing salt because it’s light texture adds a slight taste of salt without being excessively heavy.

IS CILANTRO THE SAME THING AS CORIANDER?

Yes. Cilantro and Coriander are identical. In North America, we tend to call the fresh herb Cilantro and the dried seeds or powder Coriander. Elsewhere, the whole plant is often referred to as Coriander.

INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS

CAN I SUBSTITUTE PARSLEY FOR CILANTRO?

If you’re one of those people who have an extreme dislike for cilantro, then you do not have to use it. Cilantro adds a slightly bitter freshness to this dish, which can also be accomplished with diced parsley. The substitution will obviously not be exact, but it will still taste good.

CAN I SUBSTITUTE ANOTHER TYPE OF MANGO FOR ATAULFO?

Definitely. Although I prefer Ataulfo mangos, any sweet mango will work nicely in this recipe.

CAN I USE A WHITE ONION INSTEAD OF RED?

I prefer to use red vidalia onions because they lend a beautiful colour to the salsa and they have a milder flavour than a regular white onion.
