This Puff Pastry with Brie and Fig Jam Appetizer is bursting with flavour and the perfect addition to your next party or gathering!

I love hosting and creating fun and flavourful bites to serve my friends and family. This delicious Puff Pastry with Brie and Fig Jam Appetizer was inspired by one of my favourite cheeseboard combinations: soft cheese and jam. Creamy Brie is the base for this amazing appetizer. It is beautiful paired with sweet fig jam, and complimented by the distinctive resinous flavour of Rosemary. These beautiful flavours are all wrapped up in a pouch of puff pastry and baked until they are melted inside, and golden and delicious outside.

Although these Brie and Fig Jam Appetizers are simple and small, they are bursting with flavour. The soft melted brie and tangy sweet jam are accented by the fragrant rosemary while the buttery puff pastry wraps it all up in a delicious two bite appetizer. These delicious pouches come together in under an hour, and I’m sure that once you try them you’ll be looking for a reason to make them again.

INGREDIENTS FOR THIS PUFF PASTRY WITH BRIE AND FIG JAM APPETIZER

All the ingredients for this appetizer are easy to source from any local grocer.

  • 200 grams Brie, double cream
  • 1 sprig Fresh Rosemary
  • 1/4 cup Fig Jam
  • 1 pinch Fleur De Sel
  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tbsp Water

WHAT IS FLEUR DE SEL?

Fleur de Sel (flower of salt) is sea salt. However unlike coarse or fine sea salt, it has a flaked texture as a result of crystallization on the surface of the sea water as it evaporates. It is harvested by hand, and is an ideal finishing salt because it’s light texture adds a slight taste of salt without being excessively heavy.

WHAT IS BRIE?

Brie is a soft cow’s milk cheese with an edible rind. It has a mild, buttery, and slightly earthy flavour.

IS PUFF PASTRY THE SAME AS PHYLLO DOUGH?

Absolutely not. Puff pastry is a laminated dough made with layers of butter. Phyllo has no butter, and foods made with Phyllo get their flakey texture from layers of the dough baked on top of one another. Both are delicious, but they are definitely not the same.

Place a small dollop, about 1/4 teaspoon, onto each brie chunk.

INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS

CAN I USE A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHEESE?

If you’d like, you can use a single cream brie or a Camembert in this recipe. Both would change the taste slightly, but would still make a beautiful appetizer.

CAN I USE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF JAM?

I prefer fig jam in this recipe because it has the perfect combination of sweet and tangy that beautifully compliments the creamy earthy Brie. Although it wouldn’t be quite the same, you could substitute Apricot jam for Fig if you want.

CAN I USE DRIED ROSEMARY INSTEAD OF FRESH?

Fresh rosemary has a much more potent flavour than dried. I would strongly suggest using fresh in this recipe.

CAN I USE LOW FAT BRIE?

This is a treat. It’s meant to be an appetizer, or one component of a party spread or charcuterie board. I’d suggest it is not the dish to cut calories on.

Below is a list of the main equipment/kitchen tools needed to make this puffy pastry with brie and fig jam appetizer.

  • Baking Sheets – These Nordic Ware baking sheets are the best baking sheets I’ve ever owned. I’ve purchased expensive baking sheets by big brand names, but these reasonably priced Nordic Ware are far superior. They are lightweight, clean easily, cook evenly, and never warp. I can’t recommend these highly enough.
  • Parchment Paper – I highly recommend lining your pan with parchment paper as it makes cleanup from your delicious focaccia much easier.
  • Pastry Cutter
  • Kitchen Knife
  • Cutting Board
